What Must I Do?

Two Simple Questions:

What must I do to be saved from my sins, from my separation from God?
What must I do so that I can spend eternity in heaven?

The Bible contains the answers to the above questions. If these questions are on your mind, then take a few minutes to consider a few thoughts from God's Word. Listen to the Bible, the Word of God

Your road to salvation begins with the recognition that the Bible is the Word of God. The apostle Paul wrote, “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16-17, ESV). The apostle Peter reminds us that God’s Word will endure forever. Peter wrote, “Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart, having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever, because ‘All flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of the grass. The grass withers, and its flower falls away, but the word of the LORD endures forever.’ Now this is the word which by the gospel was preached to you” (1 Peter 1:22-25, NKJV)

Salvation is Found in the Word of God

After His resurrection, Jesus said, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:18-20, ESV) The words of Jesus Christ are authority. Jesus Christ’s words, teachings, and commands are all found only in the Word of God.

To find salvation from your sins, you must be willing to listen to Jesus and His good news, His gospel. Jesus taught, “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’” (Matthew 7:21-23, NKJV)

Salvation from your sins begins with God’s love for you. Jesus said to Nicodemus, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God” (John 3:16-18, NKJV).

The belief, the conviction which comes when a person learns of sin and the reasons for Jesus’ death on the cross should cause that person to act upon that conviction, to ask the question, “What must I do to be saved?” Jesus sent out His apostles to preach the answer to that question. Jesus said, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned” (Mark 16:15-16). The apostles obeyed Jesus. When we consider Acts, chapter 2, we see the apostles preaching the message of salvation. After learning of their sins, the people who heard the preaching of the apostles asked the important question, “Why must I do?” Let us pick up in verse 36 where Peter says, “Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.” How did the people respond? Let us continue reading. “Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, ‘Men and brethren, what shall we do?’ Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call” (Acts 2:36-39, NKJV) Later in the chapter we read the results. “And with many other words he testified and exhorted them, saying, ‘Be saved from this perverse generation.’ Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them… (47)... And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved” (Acts 2:40-41, 47).
